New York Vacation

New York City is one of my favorite places to visit. I love the history, from the early Dutch settlers, to the battles of the American Revolution, to the emergence of the city as the financial center of the world and one of the twin cities of American entertainment. I love the heritage of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island , the excitement of Wall Street, and the world-class talent of Broadway. The Art Museums are among the best in the world. The bustle and electricity of Times Square at midnight is not to be missed. We have fun walking through the city and identify movie locations and see how many movies we can name that were filmed there. Every world citizen should visit the United Nation as well as take the time to meditate at the site of the World Trade Towers .

Why is New York City called "The Big Apple?"
Morning Telegraph reporter, John J. Fitz Gerald, first made common use of the term during the 1920s in reference to the city's racetracks. He apparently first heard it used by African American stable hands in New Orleans in 1921. The term was popularized among African American jazz musicians in the 1930s, who regarded New York , and particularly Harlem , as the capital city of jazz. It's modern use derives largely from a publicity campaign developed in 1971 by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.

New York History
New York is the most populous city in the United States , and the second most populous in North America , after Mexico City . Affectionately known as "The Big Apple," New York is by many measures one of the most important cities in the world. It is probably the world's most important financial center, and one of the most important cultural centers of the Western world. The United Nations headquarters is in New York , giving some credence to the city's self-designation as "capital of the world."
New York City is among the most densely populated places in the United States . Its population is more than eight million (2000 U.S. Census), and its land area is 831 square kilometers (320 square miles); hence the density is ca. 10,000/km².
